NABE President's Message - October 2017

By Robert E. Craghead

Bolton and Exemplar

Every once in a while, you have a task that is really a pleasure. I had the privilege in New York of introducing the 2017 NABE Bolton Award recipient. The Bolton Award is presented to a bar professional who “epitomizes the highest standards of professional excellence.” Some of the criteria for the award are character, integrity, vision, leadership, and service to NABE. The 2017 Bolton was presented to George Brown, the recently retired Executive Director of the Wisconsin State Bar. Congratulations to George ...he is truly an exemplar of everything a bar professional should be!

And Another Congratulations

We look forward to working with Pamela Robinson, the new Director of the ABA Division of Bar Services. As you well know, Pam is not new to DBS. Her experience will be a distinct benefit for NABE. Congratulations, Pam!

It is About You – and an Opportunity

As our own bar associations face challenges, we find that NABE is confronted with a similar quest – to make sure NABE continues its relevance to you and to provide services in a way that you would like. The NABE Board is working through the implementation of our new strategic plan that was developed with the help of Mary Byers. We have created a task force to address the first goal of the plan (see summary of plan below). The Task Force on NABE Programs and Services has 18 members - bar professionals with diverse backgrounds from across the country who represent a wide range of perspectives, from NABE sections to type of bar to geography. We have asked the task force to carefully assess and make recommendations on the full range of programs and services NABE provides and on how they can be best delivered.

The group is currently looking at all of our existing educational offerings, how we organize communities, and how we share information and knowledge. They are thinking about how well our resources align with current and future NABE member needs. It is safe to say that all task force members are thoughtful and completely committed to a successful NABE.

Your opportunity – A survey was distributed to all NABE members. Thanks to those of you that responded. In addition, the members of the task force will be reaching out directly to some of you for your thoughts. If you have questions, thoughts or concerns that you wish to share directly, you are welcome to contact the task force chair, Ellen Miller-Sharp of the San Diego County Bar.

The Board will be considering the recommendations for implementing the strategic plan in the coming months. We will keep you updated.

NABE Strategic Plan Priorities 2016-19

Vision – Foster the engagement and participation of all bar professionals in NABE by making the organization relevant, affordable and inclusive.

Goal #1 – Deliver innovative programs and services that meet the needs of all bar professionals.

Goal #2 - Ensure that NABE is accessible, affordable and inclusive.

Goal #3 – Create a culture of collaboration with allied entities to ensure best use of mutual and/or collective resources.

Goal #4 – Promote NABE’s value proposition.

Program Perfect – Comm Workshop

The communications staff of the Illinois State Bar Association would never let me attend the NABE Communications Section Workshop. Suffice to say I was jealous because “Comm” Workshops always provide valuable programming, great ideas and profound insight. The 2017 Workshop in St. Louis this week, October 3-6, will maintain that strong tradition. With the meeting a short drive from Springfield (and presidential prerogative!), I’m attending my first NABE Comm Workshop this year with the encouragement of the ISBA communications team. Best wishes to Comm Section chair Heather Folker and Workshop Planning Chair Alexa Giacomini for a successful workshop.

Advocates’ Advocates – GR Section Workshop

Also coming up in St. Louis is the 2017 NABE Governmental Relations Section Workshop, November 8-10. Thanks in advance to GR Section Chair Todd Book and to the rest of the planning team for putting together a fantastic program for legislative advocacy professionals. Visit the workshop page for registration and hotel information.
