Puerto Rico Still Needs Legal Assistance: Here’s One Way You Can Help
Nearly a year after Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, survivors still need legal assistance. While licensing and distance may make it seem impossible for your members to help, Latino Justice (formerly the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund), the Puerto Rican Bar Association of Illinois, the National Lawyers Guild Chicago, and others are providing a way through organization of a fund that supports the work of Ayuda Legal Huracán Maria (Legal Help Hurricane Maria). ALHA is a group of volunteer attorneys helping people make and appeal FEMA claims, drafting educational materials for both attorney and pro se use, and holding forums throughout remote areas of the island to provide education on Community Development Block Grants. The work of the volunteers can only go so far, so a fund has been established to raise $40,000 to create a full-time position for one year. Bar associations, attorneys, and others can contribute to the fund by:

  • Visiting the LatinoJustice Donate Webpage at latinojustice.org/support/donate/. Contributors are asked to indicate “Ayuda Legal” in the field that asks “How Did You Hear About Us” to ensure donation is correctly routed.
  • Making a tax-deductible donation via check payable to “LatinoJustice,” noting “Ayuda Legal Huracán María” in the memo portion of the check.Checks should be sent to: LatinoJustice PRLDEF, Inc., 99 Hudson St., 14th Floor, New York, NY 10013.

Deadline Approaching for Submission of Proposals to Help NABE with Priorities
Earlier this year, the NABE Board of Directors adopted a comprehensive set of recommendations from the NABE Programs and Services Taskforce. The Taskforce was asked to assess how current NABE programs and services address the needs of NABE bar professionals, identify gaps and make recommendations for changes as Past President Robert Craghead announced in
April NABE News. The Board has been working diligently to implement these recommendations and realizes that it needs some additional help to move these ideas and issuesforward. As such, the Board prepared a Request for Proposals (RFP)and is seeking consultants or bar associations to assist with all or part of these tasks. In addition, we are also seeking a bar association or consultant who can assist with our social media and website needs. Please note that nothing in this RFP changes our current relationship with the ABA’s Division of Bar Services which provides staffing and other services for NABE.

If your bar association is interested in responding to all or part of the RFP, please feel free to contact Julie Armstrong (jarmstrong@indybar.org) or Ellen Miller-Sharp (emiller@sdcba.org) with any questions. All RFP responses are due September 1, 2018.
