Happy Labor Day!
Although the heat in many corners of the country and the calendar support the notion that summer has a few more weeks, we all know that Labor Day means it’s all over.  NABE staff members, along with the rest of the ABA staff, are enjoying a long holiday weekend August 31-September 3.  Here’s hoping that you have an enjoyable and safe weekend.

Represent NABE in the ABA House of Delegates
NABE is seeking an individual to represent the organization in the ABA House of Delegates. The individual must be a lawyer and a member of the ABA, in addition to holding membership in NABE. The NABE Board of Directors will select the delegate from a list of NABE members who have submitted a letter of interest and any additional supporting information they choose (limited to 5 pages total) by October 9, 2018.  The selection will be made at the meeting of the NABE Board of Directors scheduled for late October.  Please send letter and supporting documents (as pdfs) to Pamela Robinson.

 In Canada, a gov't task force proposes that non-lawyers be allowed to provide some legal services
Yahoo! News publicized a report of the Ministry of Justice and the Law Society of Saskatchewan which suggests that some legal services be provided by non-lawyers.  The full report, released August 18, recommends:

  • providing greater clarity to service providers about what legal services are regulated;
  • expanding the list of exceptions to the prohibition against practicing law to recognize existing service providers;
  • providing the Law Society with licensing authority to allow service providers to practice law with a limited license on a case-by-case basis;
  • modernizing the legislation regulating legal services to provide more flexibility for future developments in this area;
  • creating guidelines to help educate the public about legal services; and
  • conducting pilot projects to help develop and test the recommendations.

 It's time for the legal industry to speak out for the Rule of Law
So says Mark Cohen, CEO of Legal Mosaic, a legal business consultancy in a recent opinion piece.  Is rallying around the Constitution and American institutions by the organized bar just politics or a matter of preserving the Rule of Law?  Read Cohen’s take on the issue at ABA Journal.
