President’s Message

By Robert E. Craghead

Robert E. CragheadIt’s Hard to Know Where You Are Going Without a Plan

NABE is really about you and our bar association professional community. To the distinct credit of the NABE Board, this maxim has been fully embraced this year. One significant way the Board has placed emphasis on NABE members is through extensive work on implementing a strategic plan, where the focus is on you.

At our meeting this past January, the Board took action to set preliminary priorities on recommendations that emanated from the work of a blue ribbon Task Force chaired by Ellen Miller Sharp of San Diego (thanks again Ellen and all Task Force members) and decided to retain the services of an outside consultant to help attain full implementation of the plan.

The Board will secure the services of the consultant through an RFP process that is in the works now. The consultant will be expected to (1) devise a communications system to apprise the full membership about ideas under consideration and to obtain input from you to establish final priorities and (2) create formal implementation strategies for the final priorities.

Last Call for Voters

By now, all eligible NABE members should have received ballot information for the election for NABE vice president which ends on May 1 at 11:59 p.m. eastern. If you have not received an email message with voting instructions, including a link to the election website and login credentials, please contact Nora Warens for assistance. Two excellent candidates, Terry Hill, division director of the Programs Division of The Florida Bar, and Leah Johnson, assistant executive director of The South Carolina Bar, are running to serve the NABE membership as 2018-2019 vice president and, ultimately, 2020-2021 president of NABE. Information on candidates has been posted here. Thanks to both candidates for their commitment to NABE and its goals and ideals.

NABE Uncontested Elections

In case you missed the earlier report in NABE Bulletin, the following candidates for the NABE Board of Directors were unopposed and will take seats on the board on July 1, 2018:

  • Ellen Miller Sharp, executive director, San Diego County Bar Association, secretary for a one-year term (currently at-large director)
  • Sebrina Barrett, executive director, The Missouri Bar, state bar director, term of two years
  • Greg Conyers, diversity director, State Bar of Michigan, at-large director, term of two years
  • Whitney von Haam, executive director, Wake County Bar Association, local bar director, term of two years

Congratulations to all and NABE thanks you for your commitment to the organization.

NABE President-elect Requests Your Input for NABE Committees and Action Teams

Karen HutchinsPresident-elect Karen Hutchins requests that you take two minutes to fill out the NABE Interest Form so that she may include you in the 2018-19 committee and action team appointments. As an association executive, you are keenly aware that a successful organization needs members to roll up their sleeves and help the association to move forward. Service on a NABE committee, task force, or special project allows you to directly support the mission and objectives of NABE and will enhance your membership experience. The deadline to complete the NABE Interest Form has been extended to May 4.

Tom Lunsford Set to Retire from the North Carolina State Bar

L. Thomas LunsfordTom Lunsford, executive director of the North Carolina State Bar (NCSB), has announced his retirement scheduled for December 31, 2018. Tom has been with bar more than 37 years, the last 26 as chief staff executive. NCSB President John Silverstein credited Tom with doing “a magnificent job [of] assembling a loyal and dedicated staff.” NABE thanks Tom for his ongoing support of NABE and for encouraging his staff team’s participation in the organization.

Staff Changes at the ABA Division for Bar Services

The first quarter of 2018 brought several staffing changes to the ABA Division for Bar Services (DBS). Nora Warens, who has worked closely with NABE members on membership and registration-related matters, has been promoted to the position of specialist, Meetings and Committees. Nora will continue to be the first line of contact for NABE members until her successor has been hired. Rebecca Green-Jablonsky was promoted to the position of manager, Affiliate Services, and will continue to staff specified NABE committees and sections, but also will be the primary staff for the National Conference of Bar Foundations. In broader DBS staffing news, Jennifer Lewin was promoted to the position of DBS deputy director and Teresa Peavy was promoted to the position of manager, NCBP Operations. The division wished Karyn Linn well as she elected to spend more time with her family after managing the division’s flagship program, the Bar Leadership Institute (BLI), for 10 years. Molly Kilmer Flood, senior specialist, Education-Research, will now manage the BLI. Congratulations to all on their new opportunities.
